On 9th of November 1732 St Alphonsus founded the congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, in Italy, popularly known as the "Redemptorists" with the aim to preach the Gospel to the poor, especially the most abandoned.
On 5th January 1939 three Irish Redemptorists Frs. Matthew Hickey, Gerard Mc Donnell and Leo O'Halloran landed in Colombo and from there they came to India. On October 1st 1945 the Indian Redemptorist Mission was constituted as a Vice Province. On August 15th 1972 the Province of Bangalore came into existence.
On 19th February 1992 the Region of Alwaye came into existence. Then it became an autonomous Vice Province on 3rd July 1995 and on 27th June 2008 it was erected as Liguori Province.
On 14th April 1999 the Region of Mumbai was formed which became a Vice Province on October 16, 2011. This Vice Province is named after a Redemptorist Saint, St. Gerard Majella, who is the patron saint of Expectant Mothers, motherhood and unborn Children. Many have received the gift of children through his intercession.
The Redemptorist Vice-Province of Majella is spread along the west coast of India, comprising four states viz., Karnataka (Costal), Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat. In our Vice Province, we have 6 Canonical communities - OLPS Chembur (Mumbai), Porvorim (Goa), Alangar (Mangalore), Varca (Goa), Naigaon (Vasai) and Panodi (Nashik). Besides these we have 1 residence - Sanquelim (Goa) and 2 satellite communities - Shahunagar (Belgaum) and Saverapura (Alangar).
We have 47 Priests in our Vice Province. We have 1 Brother. We have 9 students in the Theologate, 5 Philosophers, 2 Novices and 8 Juvenists. Thus in all we have 62 Professed members in our Vice Province.
We work in Konkani, Marathi Kannada, Hindi and English. As sons of St. Alphonsus our founder, we reach out to people through school programmes, parishes, retreats to different groups of people, spiritual direction, parish missions, migrant ministry, faith formation programmes, orientation and personality development programmes for students in schools and colleges, youth animation, vocation discernment, social outreach to the specially-abled and ministry of ecology: care for creation.
